Spill & Overfill Prevention Requirements
All underground storage tank systems are required to have both spill and overfill prevention, unless the UST never receives more than 25 gallons of product at a time. Some requirements have changed as part of the new EPA regulations. Below are the requirements for spill and overfill prevention, according to the EPA UST Section.
Spill Prevention
- Spill prevention equipment must be tested at least every 3 years for liquid tightness. Operators may alternatively use a double-walled spill bucket with periodic interstitial monitoring.
- Spill prevention equipment must be inspected at least every 30 days.
- Correct filling practices must be adhered to by the operator and delivery person.
Overfill Prevention
- Approved overfill prevention equipment must be installed. Approved methods include automatic shutoff devices, overfill alarms, or ball float valves.
- Overfill prevention equipment must be inspected at least every 3 years to ensure proper functionality.
- Correct filling practices must be adhered to by the operator and delivery person.
